A Chapter by Dave Brown

the King

In the high mountain pass

Where the coldest winds blow

The great Grizzly paused

To look down below

The spreading forest ahead

Had game to sustain

He raised to his great height

And roared over his domain

At nearly two thousand pounds

This great beast was a king

Able to crush most

With only one mighty swing

Downward he lumbered

Having picked up a scent

His senses further reacted

As he continued his descent

The doe standing longside, creekside

With her head to’ard the ground

So swift the attack

She heard not a sound

It was his right, he was king

Forest eyes shrunk from their foe

To let him maintain his regal throne

Nature had sacrificed this gentle doe

That is how nature intended things to be. Seems cruel but it is the natural way. Not a gun in sight. Praise the Lord for that. Can't abide those who hunt for pleasure. Animals hunted to almost extinction makes me weep.

This reads as the natural cycle of life... without man and his rifle. It also reminds me of one of the older wildlife documentaries, where photographers would strike out into the woods to capture for others what the bears and other wildlife do when not hunted. Of course, it's not just the mountain man and rifle who interrupt today. Sharp imagery in this one. Makes me wonder who is truly "king" outside the woods.

And yet the grizzly hunts and strikes for is natural...
man does it for sport, or for gain...doesn't quite make the same sense.
that message rings to me with this one...
