Very Berry

Very Berry

A Chapter by Dave Brown

pickin time

Along the bulging forest’s edge

Where field and grass intersect

Where blackberries are still filling out

Salmonberries and huckleberries

Have sent us a shout

The great black raven from above

Watches us with our buckets and pots

Climbing among berry blushed bushes

Seeking those berry bursting spots

Not yet will we hazard blackberry’s prickles

Using wooden boards to walk there among

Their defence mechanism, though formidable

Is overshadowed by the wonderful taste

Heat is yet needed, the summer’s been dull

To bring fruition to the blackberry

Along roadside and hill

Seems like you're settling, but not for much less. As you capture in this poem, it's the experience and treks through nature that are sweetest. I suppose the peak is blackberry picking, and all the memories that follow. Splendid imagery in this one, Dave.

Berry good. :)
I've never heard of salmonberries before.
Do we get those in Canada?

When I lived in Mississippi I remember going out to pick the wild blackberries, coming home and making jam out of them and spreading them on home made bread fresh from the oven! Your delightful write brought back these happy memories! Thank you. ~Sharon

that bread sounds mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmm good
Yes, this summer has been unseasonably cool here, too. We only get extreme heat for 2 or 3 hours a day & the rest of the time it's nicely comfy (altho most people would whine, even about our mild heat). I am jealous of your berry-pickin's becuz it's always been a romantic idea of mine to pick berries that have not been intentionally planted . . . living off the fat of the land. I totally relate, as far as competing with the birds. Have very berry fun! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
