From Canvas

From Canvas

A Poem by Dave Brown
"

speaking

"

Looking like it lives

From the colors it shares

A flat piece of canvas

That invites many stares

No noise, but it speaks

To the mind and the heart

Reflecting and embracing

The magic of painter’s art

A smile frozen, a blossom

A creek winding by

A bird on a wire

Lovers in fields where they lie

A butterfly’s many colors

In complete detail

Flowing from brush

To speak from flat canvas

In the loudest of hush

I am a great admirer if those who can create in this medium. I would rather have been a painter than a poet and did paint, and have done pastel drawings in the past. Still thinking about your Brixham piece. That was special. Lucky you, talented in both. Good windy afternoon from the river.

You enjoy too :)
I’m thinking that there might be an allegory here that I’m not seeing (between speaking and the blank canvas maybe) but otherwise enjoyed reading.

My father is a painter, and it’s nice to see both an ode to his craft and another Islander on this site.

( : )

Myself, I am incapable of even drawing a stick man in the correct proportion, so I have long stood in admiration of those who can take that piece of flat canvas and create something quite magical.

My mother used to paint and I remember as a child watching a TV series with her about painting. I can't recall the title or the name of the artist, but I remember still how fascinating I found it.

Hope all is well
I love this, Dave. I think of poetry in the same way. This magical space where we can freeze time and show others the way we see the world. And the great thing about both art and poetry is that everyone will perceive the work differently so it is always being renewed through contact with new minds.

Art is such a generous gift that we share with one another. Your poem expresses the core of that. The lovely ways we are touched without necessarily realizing it. The impact of art on the mind and heart can be immense. The grand thing is, it is just a rendering of reality. But shows how differently every set of eyes sees the world. Great poem.

All art communicates--most, not nearly as beautifully as this poem.

Yes, the art gallery experience! I love how you captured it. I would never have thought to write this piece, but many thanks thanks that you did.

Ah, an art lover who rhymes! Brilliant poem, Dave. Reminds me of some fine art I saw in a gallery this weekend. I think painters are poets with a steady hand and more colors.
