The Night Clerk

The Night Clerk

A Poem by Dave Brown

The night clerk held his Raven

My room was dark and bitter cold

A scarecrow limp-hung in the field

Dank, bent, ragged and old

A Raven flew to the window

Another onto near ground

Their black eyes seeking my eyes

While cawing their sick haunting sound

Rags clouds dragged a pale moon

Foul littering darkening deep night

My reflection in the black window

Looked to me, a pathetic fright

A night owl’s, hoot and screech

I backed tight gainst the back wall

Far into the darkest deep corner

Pulling tight my flimsy light shawl

Cold fingers clawed up my back

Harsh icy fingers that scratch and bite

My sanity suffered a huge crack

Cold and black was the night

As the door creaked further open

I collapsed to my knees in fright

Then saw a great flying black Raven

As it came to take my sight
