The Scarecrow

The Scarecrow

A Chapter by Dave Brown

shotgun solution

My neighbors garden is vast and extensive

The plants he has are very expensive

With the local critters being attracted to it

Especially when, the moon’s nicely lit

Tis then the many hungry wee souls

Begin climbing out of hideaway holes

Then carrots they pull to broccoli shoots

To burrowing down to sweet tender roots

The scarecrow he’s hired to guard all

Had little success from Spring to Fall

Tasty morsels continually disappear

As they’ve done for year after year

This year he purchased a nasty shotgun

Intending to ruin each wee creature’s fun

He assumed the location of his scarecrow

Intending rabbit relocation, to way down below

The soft, innocent bunny, seeking a meal

Was first to face this newly found zeal

His decision to visit after setting of sun

Had him staring into that nasty gun

Knowing this situation could leave him real dead

His long bunny ears dropped to the side of his head

With two big brown eyes bugged out so far

They reflected the light from each evening star

With his fleet feet, firmly stuck to the ground

He waited for the anticipated ka-boom mega sound

But my neighbor seeing a tear in each eye

Couldn’t pull the trigger and no wonder why

A fence now repaired, works fairly well

For killing wee bunnies, he won’t go to hell

The rusty shotgun lays in the scarecrow’s lap

Along with an amplified, scare rabbit app

Appreciate your comment and thanks for the visit
This is a well-written poem full of bouncy rhyme & rhythm which represents the way it can feel when we're fighting the garden-rodent wars. There are some creatures I cannot stand & would blast with my .38 in a heartbeat (squirrels, skunks, mice, rats) but bunnies have this heart-melting quality that makes it impossible not to share one's garden with them. They don't nibble too much. Thanks for writing my story so I didn't have to! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

A change of heart. Bunnies are God's creatures and they suffer hunger too. A story with a happy ending Dave. Way to go.

You can go to hell for shooting a bunny? How about a robo caller?

Who'd want to shoot a bunny anyway? He made a good choice and is bound for heaven. :)

Robert's sentiments exactly.
Nice to have a visit from you Relic
I love it. Such a wonderful poetic story and I'm so happy there was no sad ending here.
Side note: I have a vegetable garden too. Had to put a fence around for just that reason.
Bunnies and deer. Cute things but... :)
