Gather Round

Gather Round

A Chapter by Dave Brown

Gather round gather round

And I’ll tell you the tale

Of alley cat Tom

Found in freezing rain

Half way down a filthy drain

Just a wee sound, very near

Sounding like a mew of fear

Which Hyram McGrew reached into

Through the filth and slop and goo

To feel a scrawny little beast

Who’s mews of fright never ceased

Then pulled him out

By the nape of the neck

Looking no more than a filthy fleck

But slippery he was from filth and goo

He slithered away and ran into

The black alley, all bundled in fright

Ran away through the night

They looked but never heard or found

Even the slightest little sound

Of the tiny filthy slip

Who vanished like a radar blip

When his black eyes lost their spark

Fading away into dark

Tommy McGee found him there

All cloaked in mud with barely hair

And cuddled him close in his arm

To keep him safe from further harm

Back to the shack where Tommy stayed

To where they loved and where they played

And they grew, the inseparable two

Always both staying in view

Until that terrible day

When Tommy could no longer play

And the ageing alley cat

Then just sat and sat

On the field where they had played

And eventually, only laid

Until the day he also traveled to

The portal Tommy had gone through

Where Tommy took him in his arm

Where neither again

Suffered harm
