Lonely Shoe

Lonely Shoe

A Chapter by Dave Brown

A lonely shoe left in the closet

With boots, slippers and stuff

Had lost its mate and was alone

Left with just its imagination

As it sat alone it dreamed

Of finding a place on a foot that

Was attached to a leg and a body

That went for long walks cross bridges

Cross bridges that crossed streams

Where frogs and fish hopped and swam

Past snakes and lizards and pollywogs

Past trees and bushes growing on ridges

Down long roads weaving and turning

With a small dog walking longside

That sniffed the bushes and chased squirrels

And lay on its laces when both stopped to rest

To look cross the valley while clouds danced

In the bright sky where birds were flying

Where the blue stretched to each horizon

Where dreams flew free and true

To watch Flamingo’s fly in a flock

To watch a mouse climb up a clock

To watch seagulls on the end of the dock

To watch trees growing longside the Hemlock

To watch a leaf hang from a tree

To watch a fish jump from the sea

To watch the flight of a Bumblebee

To watch the growth of a wee garden pea

Tho left alone, it did have those dreams

Until one day things were to change

When joined by the other shoe and two feet

Which took them both walking cross bridges

I love to read the musings of this lonely shoe. Though I have a soul, I'm missing shoe laces. Even so, it's thoughts are a lot like my own.
In the Navy, we usually left our shoes on the deck below our racks. As you might imagine, missing shoe stories were common. I remember one guy was furious because someone took his shoe strings. Seems the taking of said strings was worse than taking the whole damned shoe.

Despite your resistance to writing a metaphorical masterpiece, this might be one. Many of the poems I've read lately seem to feature someone feeling life can't begin until there's a "special someone" to share it with. You can imagine how this chafes my independent sensibilities, but that's the way most people are put together. Your poem harkens to the way people feel incomplete when not part of a pair. Or maybe this is just an excuse to do a flight of nature, which you embellish with a ton of sparkling details. Damn! I wuz wishin' I could be going on that walk, too! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
