A Chapter by Dave Brown

Greeted by morning’s unusual sight

A very small bird, not taking flight

I plucked it gently from the ground

And it settled, with no sound

Then, with an excuse me nod

It fluttered down to the sod

And with a thought to’ard its needs

Resumed eating the offered seeds

Still thinking it might be in pain

I reached down once again

And took it gently in my palm

Where it sat quiet and calm

Pity, concern, both I felt

This wee thing made my heart melt

As together we walked the garden path

Till it hopped onto the bird bath

Of this occurrence, I must conclude

It had not wanted to be rude

And instead of the usual eat and run

It paused to express its appreciation
