Cattle Town

Cattle Town

A Chapter by Dave Brown

Walkin down Cattle Town’s dusty front street

With my spur’s janglin on both umuh feet

As I’m walkin I don’t see no persons around

Even on the boardwalk, don’t hear no any sound

We was sposed to meet somewhere near noon

He’d have to hurry cuz, to get here real soon

Them both clock hands are stickin up high

Real obvious against the steaming noon sky

Then I heard the saloon door as it creaked

And a western drawl from a cowboy that speaked

Telling me that it were twelve o’clock high

And fer what I wuz looking, he were the guy

I stopped there out in the middle of the way

Cuz it were obvious he were gunna make his play

But before I could get turned full around

He pulled his iron and I heard that killin sound

A huge hammer threw me back into the dust

With half of my body felling like it had bust

But though I don remember, I’d pulled my 45

We’d both been hit and now neither one were alive

They got us in the wagon and hauled us away

It seems down six feet, where we wuz gunna stay

But we wuz up above, looking down below

And didn’t care where our remains wuz gunna go

Somehow, what we decided to shoot it out over

Had also got buried neath that same field of clover

And all the bad feelings that we used to had

For now and evermore doesn’t seem all that bad

Another of your spot-on shoot-em-up wild-west storylines. Your poem flows well with strong rhyme & orbital imagination. I love how you put the hammer down on ignorant badass dialogue . . . exactly as one might hear in most cattle towns. This ignorant shtick explains why most people don't get me, around here in hillside hovels where I live. Once again, you dazzle us with your multi-linguistic abilities (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
