Free Verse

Free Verse

A Chapter by Dave Brown
"

yes

"

In an effort to upgrade my image

I made an attempt to write free rhyme

Consulting my computer for assistance

My finger’s started tapping each line

(oops! I mean each word)

The theme I was to pursue

It couldn’t help me there

It offered only

A black empty stare (I mean, empty screen)

With my fragile image being a concern

Staying away from any rhymes

Was a method, I just hand to learn (er, Figure out)

But total frustration with all lack of rhyme

(uh oh I mean sameness)

Resulted in only a scream and a shout

(Oppps, I mean, the hell with it)

This might be too obscure for anyone but a rhyme-aholic to "get" . . . and I LOVE IT! This is the crux of "SHOW don't tell" -- you make us feel that tug, so hard to resist, rhyming without even realizing we've done it. I love your snarky slice (first line) for all the free-versers who scorn us rhymers, saying we're not sophisticated as they supposedly are. When I do free verse, I get more passionate reviews, so I can tell people like it better. But stopping myself from rhyming would be like trying to hold back a s**t that's reached it's time *wink! wink!* Fondly, Margie

i am as unsophisticated as they come and poetry meant rhyming to me so i don't really get free verse
Every time I try free verse, my muse goes on a strike. So something must rhyme in all my poems, to keep her cooperative.

Gladly I'm off them for now. They're like little monsters chewing the brain. :)
My free verse generally starts as a conversation with myself.
You should try it. :)
You're still rhyming here. But I'm thinking that's intentional. :)
