Pumpkin Plight

Pumpkin Plight

A Chapter by Dave Brown

As I walked past a farmer's field

I saw a pumpkin waving

I’d never seen such a thing

Could a pumpkin be misbehaving

Stumbling across the muddy field

I asked it about that wave

Looking at me with its no face

This was the explanation it gave

"I am stuck in this soggy field

And the conditions are appalling

Sunlight fries me, rain beats me down

And that farmer! No use for me to be calling

I hear that I will come under the knife

With all my entrails being removed

Meaning the end of my life

None of which I’ve approved

Holes will be carved into my shell

In a process of trial and error

Then candles will burn my insides

It fills me with nothing but terror!"

To console this upset, seed bearing fruit

I told it about the concept of ‘enjoy’

And how a carved face and pumpkin pie

Would bring endless amounts of joy

Looking at me with some comfort

It realized that its life wasn’t through

And that it had much more to offer

And would do what a pumpkin should do

I said I’ll take you with me right now

Because I’ve just the perfect fence post

And as we enjoy the pie you’ve enabled

You can become our official host

Magically, a smiling face appeared

As it welcomed my open arms

Now it sits proudly by our front door

Contentedly displaying its grinning charms

Once again, your imagination is sparkling full bore in this entertaining Halloween ditty. You've gone out into a pumpkin field where no other writer has ventured, as is your style. Loving spaghetti squash, I saved some seeds last autumn, planted them this spring, & surprisingly, I got pumpkins this summer. But later I got some spaghetti squash, too. I need to tighten up my seed collection & labeling. Your poem reminds me that all is not gore & disgust just becuz it's "that time of year"! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
