Vegetable Gardens

Vegetable Gardens

A Chapter by Dave Brown
"

yes

"

Peter and his wife Mary, didn’t jell

So, he put her inside a pumpkin shell

Intending to leave her inside to dwell

But back and forth she rocked her cell

The pumpkin became very unstable

Finally falling off the kitchen table

Hit the floor, rolled out the door

Down to the sea and floated offshore

Of some comfort re; Peter’s deception

Mary found she had cell phone reception

And while floating across open sea

She made contact with her attorney

As she made landfall on a tropical beach

Peter’d had his a*s sued for marital breach

After which there would be, of course

Support and damages with the divorce

Peter, considered a danger to flee as well

Was arrested and locked in the pumpkin shell

But as similarly unstable as before

It rolled out the door, then floated offshore

Mary seized his wealth, tout de suite

Leaving only pumpkin seeds for Peter to eat

Who learned that if not offering a wifely pardon

Best to stay away from the vegetable garden

This is one of your tightest creations, regarding rhyme & rhythm. I envy how you tell a complicated love episode in such simple terms, using a sing-song cadence that suggests these marital woes are a big hilarious crackup to you. Most strong writers are noted for their ability to evoke empathy toward their characters, but your very offbeat essence comes from your flippant scorn for all these trials & tribulations you put your characters thru. Thank you for keeping it light becuz there's nothing more tedious than reading a divorce rant (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

another highly admirable review
competent comment on display
You've written a modern day fairy tale that belongs with all the classics. It's a work that could be read by kids who would be amused by the floating pumpkin, but it contains within it a metaphor that only one who has loved could understand. A work that's simultaneously light and deep, it's hard to do.
