Backroom Boys

Backroom Boys

A Chapter by Dave Brown

In the backroom of the pub

The old boys would all meet

To enjoy some good stories

And get off their tired feet

One old near bald guy, a poet

Would entertain all the others

With his poems ranging from

Fantasy to heartbroken lovers

But it was the poem about

A fast ride that he took

When he was gainfully employed

As a career crook

How they’d been interrupted

With a break-in incomplete

How they’d ran to the getaway car

Parked out on the street

How the coppers had chased them

And how through black night they fled

About how they missed that cliff corner

And all ended up dead

How he’s now only an apparition

And here, he just winks

Which is the only reason, he says

He never helps pay for the drinks
