Distant Seas

Distant Seas

A Chapter by Dave Brown

A little mouse came to our front door

Outside, terrible weather was freezing

Asking if he could come in and be warm

Desperate, we’d be appeasing

Certainly braver than I would be

But it was ‘that’ time of season

Desperate, because he’d perish outside

With that weather being none too pleasin

We made a small, lined matchbox bed

Beside our fireplace heat

Bringing both water and best of cheese

For the sorry little creature to eat

Gratitude shone from soft brown eyes

There seemed to be a connection

As he lay his head and slept

Knowing he’d face no surprise

When we woke the next morning

Breakfast was waiting on the table

A handsome young man also waited

Waiting to relay a short fable

Of how he had once been mean and cruel

Becoming someone, no one could trust

How the fairies and their princess

Were going to turn him into dust

When he begged for their mercy

They instead, turned him into a mouse

With the condition that to survive

He had to be invited into a human’s house

At every door he was screamingly rejected

Mercilessly chased by dog and cat

Until with the last ounce of desperate hope

It was outside our front door, near frozen he sat

A mouse he was, but broke our hearts

Freezing weather had him next to dead

We had guaranteed he would live on

When he’d lay down his exhausted head

He’ll leave us when next spring’s blossom’s burst

Back to the fairies, the birds and the bees

And each sunny morning on our flowered patio

They’ll bring us warm coffee from distant seas

This mouse had probably been knocking on doors on the USA side of the border, where so many grinches live, then it finally got over onto the Canadian side & struck paydirt with the first namby-pamby polite sucker he happened upon, which was probably you. I have no tolerance of rodents, whatsoever. I wouldn't share my coveted cheese with just any creature that knocked on my door, not even my old hunky Fedex guy (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I've heard Canadians are very polite people, but I didn't know it extended to talking mice. It's a nice story, though, reminiscent of one of Aesop's fables. But tell me, when the mouse spoke, did he end each sentence with "eh?"
