The Icon

The Icon

A Chapter by Dave Brown

I felt the tropic air spit

As it dove down for me

I quickly dropped to a crouch

As razored talon's slashed wildly

Jagged lines of dripping blood

Crossed my forehead magically

Then the great raptor rose

Into a distant tree

Though I yelled at my true love

My weak voice could not be heard

And I could only helpless watch

Again's attack, from that powered bird

When huge talon's grasped for her head

I feared this grand misguided, so stirred

Would leave her lying dead

But, with the size of this

Causing even skies to part

My true love’s quick side step

Brought relief to my near bursted heart

Tho' this time, I’d raised my blow tube

And had struck it with a dart

The wildness of this giant

Reflects the spirit of our tribe

I’d merely leashed it with a stun

Our adopted symbol had not died

We had summoned it to attend

By the ceremonial fireside

As two, who will come together

Become husband and bride

It will then leave us on its wings

Returning to its mountain home

Where above the lush palm trees

It will re-seat upon its throne

There to wait patiently

Never once inclined to roam

Until it will be again called upon

As has all been forever known

Unca Dave . . . pooches say "woof!" This brings to mind some of the best storylines I've read with Native American themes & symbolism. I love the symbol of a warrior icon that makes us bleed as a rite of passage into adulthood. I love that the same icon making us bleed is also presiding over the most sacred union of love, & this shows how everything is not black & white . . . many aspects of life can be both the best & worst thing that ever happened to a person. I also love the way, in the first few verses, the narrator shows his concern for his partner in such an open & loving way (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I had a running nightmare of a raptor that sat perched across from me it would read my mind and stare into my eyes if I had a negative thought about this bird it would fly over to me and tear into me I was unable to run or defend my self because I was tied to a pole this was a frequent dream I used to have:/ this story reminds me of it. Interesting story mr Brown

An interesting fantasy tale, Dave. I don't even want to think about what havoc a bird this size would wreak on a windshield. A vat of Windex wouldn't even put a dent in it.
