A Chapter by Dave Brown

He sat near the tree, out on his old porch

Both sagging from years of ageing

The old chair he sat on was worn and sagged

He was old and he was tired

He sat quietly almost asleep

Occasionally he’d looked at the old guitar on his lap

And his mind would stir

He’d remember the music he used to play

Uncontrolled, his hand would begin moving

And he would hear the music starting

As it drifted up from his lap

It was like taking a fresh breath

But it was sweet music he was breathing

The deeper he breathed, the sweeter the sound

He bent his head down close

To share the moment all the more

The chair seemed to sag less

The porch almost straightened

Words slipped from his lips and he listened

To the sound he once knew so well

Until, slowly

It faded away
