the Broom

the Broom

A Chapter by Dave Brown

The old straw broom, in the great Castle

No longer enjoyed the sweep and clean hassle

Whenever requested to sweep any floor

It quickly swept itself out the back door

This left the Castle floor clogged with dirt

Something the old Maid wished to avert

What needed to be done and awfully darn soon

The King needed to employ a new broom

An ad was placed in the local rag

For a sweeper with a more enthusiastic dust bag

To be readily available when anyone calls

And to be absolutely thrilled when sweeping long halls

The first broom that was interviewed

Was poorly glued and had a poor attitude

Its handle was bent, its straw was a mess

Why it applied, was any one’s guess

Thirty-three brooms later after getting nowhere

A hopeful applicant came up the front stair

This was a much different sort of a broom

With a Tech diploma for ridding dirt from a room

Its construction was straight and true

The latest straw attached with the latest glue

Not from China, no, no way

Being employed to start the very next day

Assured they had employed ‘the’ dust antidote

It was assigned a broom closet overlooking the moat

With a heartfelt sense of instant rapport

This was a broom, King and Maid could adore

Next morning the old Maid summoned the broom

To assign its first sweep, in the Great Room

The dust there was especially deep

The perfect area, to start a clean sweep

She left the room, closing the door

With the new broom left to cure the eyesore

By the time the old Maid returned to her place

Swirling dust had filled the Castle’s vast space

A loud noise began ricocheting all around

Resonating all through the vast regal ground

When the old girl looked out into the hall

She could see absolutely nothing at all

Dust so thick it swirled all about

She so shocked she nearly blacked out

The new broom had swept all in its path

Like a madman on the warpath

Floors and dust were swept past castle gate

Weakened stone walls could no longer stay straight

As they collapsed they were all swept away

Nary a wall saved for a rainy day

When the dust settled, the castle was gone

Even the tower bell couldn’t offer a gong

The last seen of the broom’s wild way

Was as it swept the new giant causeway

The old King and his maid were forced into town

With no Castle now and no sight of his Crown

When these two now see dirt on any floor

It is something they completely ignore

The country around has been swept away

Which all happened in less than a day

Two islands, a mountain and district all gone

All a result of a broom gone completely wrong

The Navy responded with capture in mind

But a sonic Broom-boom left them too far behind

Then the Army, girl guides and Boy Scouts

But little to offer, other than shouts

The Broom was last seen sweeping away

Through great cities, cross fields of hay

And if you have a just wee dusty bit

You could soon be seeing too much of it

I think the Lions' Club bears some of the blame here.

Just shows how often I do any sweeping, I didn't know selling brooms was their thing
Don't get me started on Chinese brooms, spanners, just anything.
There's a moral to this story. A broom is just not for Christmas, It's for the life of the broom.
Just know I'm getting millions of adverts for brooms now, all coming from that bloody country. Where's that left-handed screwdriver now.

Ha, what an epic tale. You certainly have imagination. A broom with a mind all of its own and with a huge amount of energy too. Sweeping the world clean. A fun write Dave. Have a great day.

from where You got that idea!?!! I was SO enjoyably reading this fairy tale but then at the ending verses I sensed a certain wisdom that makes this poem even more brilliant!! I am so sure this Broom is for a Witch, her attitude leaves no doubt. now please ladies ignore the dust when you can or we will end with no land at all. really wonderful piece my friend, thank You for sharing it with us, we and this world need more smiles so thank You even tenth times :)
