Backhand Slice

Backhand Slice

A Chapter by Dave Brown

The tennis racquet was refusing advise

That would cure its backhanded slice

Having always done things its way

That is the only way it intended to play

Then a total shock, when put on the block

Away from it, the owner would walk

A new racquet with no slice attached

It and the x-owner, were perfectly matched

Endless pleading was to no avail

With old racquet available at a garage sale

There bought for dimes on the dollar

Along with a leash and a dog collar

The dog thought it was some new kina toy

Stirring up Doberman Pincer type joy

But as he put it into his mouth for a chew

A thought entered his head, something new

Suddenly knowing how to play tennis for real

The serve, the volley, the whole frikkin deal

Then in a set of tennis, suitable clothes

To the competitions, he was led by the nose

There, playing this competitor and that

Match after match, each one fell flat

Until one half of the playoffs had ceased

With Doberman and racquet winning the east

Old owner and new racquet faced their test

Successfully those two had won the west

With it now being old racquet against new

We’d know the winner when it was through

Back and forth the tennis balls shot

Each swing picking the perfect spot

But new racquet, rolling the dice

Set up old racquet for a backhanded slice

The moment was desperate, the tension real

A backhand slice would sink the whole deal

As old racquet streaked down toward the ball

Its backhand slice underwent a complete overhaul

Instead of slicing right out of the park

The game was won with an overhead arc

Having the nastiness new racquet had planned

Bringing just ‘boos’ from the grandstand

Old racket has had it design copied lots

With its ability to hit perfect spots

Oh yes, Doberman is quite famous too

But he’d really rather a good bone to chew
