A Chapter by Dave Brown

The hospital phoned

Get over right away

Geeze, what the hell

Had happened today

Grabbed my pills

Slammed down the bunch

But had to do it

Middle of my lunch

Leaving no time to finish

My extra large piece of chocolate cake with double thick chocolate icing and ice cream desert

And spilled the remainder

All over my shirt

Did they want more blood

I was getting pretty thin

It’d be nice to leave

A quart or two in

Stubbed my toe

On the edge of the stair

Stumbled wildly forward

Crashing into a chair

Uttered a curse

Instead of a prayer

But because of that

Bone shattering fall

911 was given

A desperate hurry-up call

As I lay there in agony

Sprawled across the floor

The phone ran again

Insistently once more

I managed to grab it

While I lay and I moaned

To hear them apologize that

It was the wrong person they’d phoned

... the ability to find humor in conflict and pain impowers us (Not the inhumanity that laughs at a person in pain). Just that good old slapstick humor that eases stress after the fact. Nothing like a good war-story shared amongst comrades.
Excellent pacing in this story with great delivery.

dang! the humor seems so misplaced that it actually brought tears of sorrow and pain .. i thought first of 9/11 ... not 911 ... what a dark day that was for America ... we have never been attacked at home from the outside with such devastation and deliberate horror on the innocent. Such cowardly deeds held up in our enemies worlds as something to shout about ... youth may have a hard time understanding why we take the fight to our enemies and enemies of our friends ... remembering 9/11 will remain a history that must not be forgotten .. along with all the rest ... you may not have meant the "number play" but even without it .. the setting, scene and action are vivid .. enjoyed the bits of rhyme .. it seems like glue to further cement your poem ... if this is confessional, Dave, my heartfelt empathy over the toe and subsequent tumble ... who can not relate to such pain as a well stubbed toe!! as for the humor .. might just as well laugh for cryin' eh!? peace brother!

the similarity between the 911's had escaped me, quite likely because I would never be presumptuous .. read more

Don't waste the raspberries :) Sun out in Brixham. Mists have lifted.
I started laughing, but then I caught myself thinking, "Is it OK to be amused at another man's misery?" The Germans call it schadenfreude. :)

sounds like a good name for it
Imagine having a specific name for another's misfortune
