All Types of Stereo

All Types of Stereo

A Poem by Trey Evans
"

The problem of finding yourself when you're lost in the world.

"

When I was born

Nobody told me I had to like rap music

That I had to be disrespectful

That I had to sell drugs

I wasn’t informed of this

The fact that I had to dumb down my intelligence

I had to wear designer clothes

I had to be profane

I wasn’t informed of this

Who informed me?

Society did.

It told me that if I didn’t sag

That if I didn’t wear flashy attire

If I acted like an idiot for attention

That I would fit in

But, if I were to fit in..

How would I stand out?

T...a lesson to learn in our bones here about conformity. It's not conformity when we happen to like/love whatever...music, food, fashion or whatever...regardless of current opinion or tastes. It is conformity when we do, listen, eat, wear or whatever simply to fit in.

About the poem...it seems to contradict itself. In the first two stanzas, you repeat 'I wasn't informed of this'. In the third and fourth stanzas you say 'society' informed you. You might consider reconciling this. Really like the ending. (Fitting in, btw, is way overrated. Everything is so much more interesting on the edges.)

Keep at it...welcome to WC...bobc
