cocktail napkin scribblings

cocktail napkin scribblings

A Poem by Dionysian Gnostic

in the vastness of solitude
a napkin can be a friend
quietly consuming your thoughts
with a few flicks of a pen

cool glass dripping smudges
wet words make fuzzy text
cold beer makes fuzzy minds
I can write a symphony of thought
floating, blissful, medicinal thoughts
and hide them under the frothy foam
of a smooth slippery drink

subtle ambient noises
more like voices flickering
in the distance
the distance of mighty oceans
and yet I’m so close
to everyone
I could make eye contact
a contact sport
so nearly alone
in the diminished renderings
of a smooth buzz caught
on a cocktail napkin
somewhere between a scribble
and a scream

I have scribbled in such a way many times. Often it comes to nothing, in the same way, that a brief few words, or a glance across a crowded room, leads nowhere; but sometimes, just sometimes, the spark becomes flame.

Keep scribbling. :))

Beccy.

This is brilliant & compelling, all along. I looked at that title & was expecting something much more mundane. I was delightfully surprised with the freshness of your approach. Great dance of barstool imagery & the writing life. Love the closely repeated words: "make eye contact a contact sport" . . . and the last two lines create a strong finale for your magnificent musings! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
