Modern Man

Modern Man

A Poem by Luis Gabriel
"

a gentle condemnation meant to inspire reformation, it is not at all meant to be hateful nor overbearing.

"

Modern Man, oh Modern Man where did you

Learn to be stupid? Who taught you to be a fool?

You say you know all, speaking of your complete

Inability to fall.

Oh Modern Man, Modern Man why did you make it

Your quest and never ending plan to kill wisdom

and shank humility? Why did you strip Intelligence

butt naked off all its natural splendor, it’s nobility.

Instead, you taught it to be a w***e and a skank

Lending itself to any old philosophy born of any old fallacy

If it semi-makes-sense, to those who are semi-smart, or perhaps semi-dense,

Then we shall fund it, with many a Euro, Dollar, Rubi, Yen, or Six-pence

In the name of freedom of thought, even those thoughts that run cyclically

Modern Man, if you are so smart,

why do you always listen to your desires and never your heart?

Modern Man, if you are ever so wise

why do you not see the potential for greatness in a poor child’s eyes?

Modern Man, if you are so great

why have you forgotten how to love but learned well how to hate?

Modern Man, if you are so strong and proud,

why do the bones of your foundation creek and groan oh so loud?

Modern Man, I do not seek in anyway to hurt or condemn you

Nor do I write this to make you irate and offend you

Instead, I seek to inform… that perhaps it is wise to listen

To the wisdom of those not yesterday-born.

Yes, technology and progress is well and great but the neglect

Of both the heart and mind have left you in a pitiful state.

Well come now, do not be afraid come inside,

Let’s get you cleaned up, come my friend do not be shy

I have food and drink for you, wisdom and love

To teach you, I hope my kindness does not freak you… out.

I know you are not conditioned to it but that can be changed

A new re-conditioning prone to goodness can be arranged

It cannot be forced and never cruelly co-erced. Come with me

Friend, together we shall learn.

How to get burned by the fires of compassion for which all

Mankind, on his bed, so twists and turns. Come and warm yourself,

sit with me by it’s light. See it is not so bad! In fact, you may

Find in time that through meeting it you are very much happy and glad.

Perhaps you should know, the sadness will never go away

because you have been holding onto it everyday. Perhaps it will leave,

as the darkness does when there is a light, when you decide that it is best

to fight those deep dark thoughts of yours that painfully obscures the right.

Did you not learn the danger of treachery from Macbeth?

Did you not learn from the bible what love is and that lack of it can cause death?

Did you not learn nor hear the goodness of peace from Ghandi?

And that maybe the good things in life are not limited to brand names such as Lamborghini and Versacci?

Perhaps, modern man more simply put for the excessively proud,

The humble richness of every day things, will expand your years

and reduce your fears. An example! a favorite song sung aloud!

Or maybe the shapely silhouette of a spouse in the dark?

Or the joy of your children’s laughter that resounds and

Echoes in the caves of your heart?

All these things are good as well and perhaps they will not

Lead you down dark paths sucking you dry until you are but a shell.

Perhaps these things will not teach you the truth about the existence of a hell

And why it was that Adam and Eve, Julius Caesar, and The Pharaohs all fell.
