Unkindness

Unkindness

A Poem by Annabelle Lee

I'm sitting on the floor
But you should know, you put me there
Crying eyes bloodshot and sore
What you're doing isn't fair

Run to my bedroom at the end of the day
Shut the door and belt it out
On my own and unafraid
I'm free to sing out loud

I sit alone in the back of the room
Won't even raise my hand
I'll be out of here real soon
I won't have to be afraid again

Slammed my head into the wall
Screamed at me, called me f****t
Lock myself in the bathroom stall
Wondering where's my pride or if I ever had it

Baggy sweatshirts to hide the bump
Make no eye contact with anyone
It's too big to cover up
I'm scared and all alone

Long sleeves and bracelets hide the scars
My friends can never see
I can't let my personal issues mar
Their opinions of me

Run to the bathroom after lunch
I can't help it anymore
Time to throw everything up
Pray nobody walks through that door

Cover up all of the bruises
Paint a smile on my face
Go ahead and make excuses
Daddy's stressed from working all day...

The human race is so unkind
Even after adolescence
But this is often the first time
Unkindness is really present

I remember being bullied in high school and when I told a teacher about it, all they did was make the person say sorry to me. But what teachers don't realize is that bullying is a serious issue and can make people self-harm or want to die, or maybe they don't care... I empathize with you on the emotions in this poem

Your phrasing is powerful and compelling... skillful use of emotions, too. Different kinds of grieving, so many heartbreaking memories. Beautifully conceived and rendered!

thank you.
I remember being in your shoes. I'm twice your age now...and looking back, nobody could bribe me to go back to those years. I went through the same sort of self-harm, low self esteem...hid in the bathrooms during lunch...omg girl I was so there. You know what ended the harm I was doing to myself? When I realized I'm worth it...I'm worth something better than a shallow case of anorexia...I'm worth being loved. And some day...when you have this same epiphany...you will see how petty all of this is. Don't give any one person the power to put you down. Take the power back...you are God's creation...you are something special...you are a one and only rarity....that makes you PRICELESS.

You won't always be a 'kid' Annabelle. You have a talent and your writing is a good way to keep yourself well 'in the mind'. Perhaps one day it will be the making of you.
