Falling into (fifty fifth) place

Falling into (fifty fifth) place

A Poem by Annabelle Lee
"

Sort of my in-house rival. It's healthy to be a little competitive with your teammates

"
On the bus, headphones on
God I really love this song

When you feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame

The rain hits the windows, washes names away
Our senior, our coach, but mine's on the other side, safe

Alone and helpless like you've lost your fight

But mine's not the only survivor, there's one more still on
My best friend, my rival, her name stays on

But you'll be alright, you'll be alright
Cuz when push comes to shove
You take what you're made of

We're at the start, two more girls on the team
But I'm only thinking of her and me
The last names on the window
The two that go at it
This is State, though, and I've about had it

You might bend till you break
Cuz it's all you can take

One mile in, i see her ahead
I try to catch her, but my calves are dead

On your knees you give up
Decide you've had enough

I can't catch her, she's too far ahead
Don't know what I was thinking
She's always been the best

You get mad, you get strong, wipe your hands
Shake it off
Then you stand

She had no downhill kick
I've got my chance, and I take it
I'm gaining on her, and my shoe's about to fall off
It hurts so bad and all I want to do is stop
I got her! I'm through, It's all coasting from here
But I hear her breathing behind me, nearer and nearer

Get to the straightaway
All I have to the finish
Running so fast
Knowing it's too late to quit

Crossing that line, though 55th, I've won
And that cant be taken away by her or anyone

Every time you get up
And get back in the race
One more small piece of you
Starts to fall into place

Author's Note

Annabelle Lee
On the way to where our state was, we got some good ol fashioned bipolar Kansas weather, spurts of rain that only hit one side of the van. But our cheering section back home had used window chalk to paint all our names on the van and the one side that got rained on had the three names-including my coach- that were not me and this rival girl. (Yes, our 'team' consisted of four girls) I saw that as some kind of sign. Like "Forget everyone else, you know what you're after"

Stole lyrics from "When you stand" by Rascall Flatts.

Thank you.
Interesting integration of lyrics and personal experience to the poem. Very interesting... I haven't done this yet and I think it must be quite a challenge. :)
