Poema dedicado a cidade de Nova Iorque (translation below)

A Poem by 外人 (Gaijin)
"

Been to New York a month ago, first time in the States ... first time in North America !

"
Gigantes de cimento rodeam meu olhar,
escuridao, luz e cores aranham o ceu,
Manhattan, desta forma, deixas-me sem ar
em ver o fruto do homem abraçar o ceu.

Nova Iorque, Nova Amsterda, novo mundo,
uma nova pessoa sinto-me em fundo,
esta è a magia da grande maça,
adimito, minha amiga, virei seu fa.

Do globo, pessoas vem de cada canto,
buscam em ti uma nova vida,
por isso para ti este poema canto,
de tantas culturas es uma cidade tao rica.

Nova Iorque, Nova Amsterda, novo mundo,
uma nova pessoa sinto-me em fundo,
esta è a magia da grande maça,
adimito, minha amiga, virei seu fa.

Pessoas de toda origem vivem neste encanto,
e dao novo significado à palavra "americano",
todas as cores e os idiomas ha de baixo do teu manto
estrelado.

Nova Iorque, Nova Amsterda, novo mundo,
uma nova pessoa sinto-me em fundo,
esta è a magia da grande maça,
adimito, minha amiga, virei seu fa.

TRANSLATION
Title: Poem dedicated to the city of New York

Cement giants surround my eyes,
darkness, light and colours scratch the sky,
Manhattan, this way, you leave me breathless
in seeing the work of men embracing the sky.

New York, New Amsterdam*, new world,
a new person I feel (I am) inside me,
this is the magic of the big apple,
I admit, my friend, I became your fan.

From the world, people come from every corner,
they look for a new life inside you,
that's why I sing** you this poem,
of so many cultures, you're such a rich city.

New York, New Amsterdam*, new world,
a new person I feel (I am) inside me,
this is the magic of the big apple,
I admit, my friend, I became your fan.

People from all countries live this dream,
and give a new meaning to the word "american",
there're all the races and languages below your starry
mantle***.

New York, New Amsterdam*, new world,
a new person I feel (I am) inside me,
this is the magic of the big apple,
I admit, my friend, I became your fan.

*New York used to be called New Amsterdam when it was a dutch belonging
**The use of the verb "to sing" has been chosen both because it is an old-style expression in neo-latin languages (to sing a poem instead of to recite a poem) and to play on the word "canto" which in Portuguese means both "corner" and "I sing"
***In the original language (Portuguese) the last word is "starry", in the English translation I had to put it first and use mantle as the last one in order to respect the adjective-noun order of the English language

Wonderful poem. I am a genealogy buff and have traced some of my family back to New Amsterdam. It is fascinating and not well covered by history books the impact the relatively "small" colonization the Dutch had - they set the tone for both economics and the diversification of the "protestant" church movement here in the US

Nice poem. I've never been to New York, but I'm sure the city would feel honored to receive such a dedication had it any capability to feel anything. Great poem, and interesting footnotes.

Oh I am so enamored by your write here, just lovely sentiments, and well deserved by a city so rich in culture and being the melting pot that is it's driving force! Thanks so much for the translation, I'm sure it sounds sexier in French! Kudos!

You're welcome, my friend :)
I read both version. While I don't speak Portuguese there was still a beautiful flow to the words. The translation touched me as I live in the United States and my Scotch Irish ancestors came here through Ellis Island. I am a mixture of many people...Scottish..Irish...German..Navajo Indian and Mexican. Thank you for writing this beautiful poem.
