Together We Gain

by Ann Mody Lewis Ph.D.

We the people’ gathered today

Coming from distances so far away

We stood side by side with American Pride

Different, but the same,

…We are America’s face and fame.

We carried the torch of generations

To light equality’s path

Feminist women and men now realize life

Is richer when we stand, together, hand in hand

Walking peacefully across this incredible land

Willing to fight for what we know is our right.

What awakened us from our deep sleep?

Passing from despair to hope?

Only possible when action is invoked!

For generations’ dreams of feminine leadership were ignored and unfair

Women decided to shout in many ways:

‘We the people’ claim this land as ours to have and hold

Until our story is completely told!

We will not ‘go back’ or be ‘side-tracked’

.The time has come

..For women to be acknowledged

…Without reservation

….Or fear of incrimination

Understanding the anguish of life

.Women will lead from the seed of our history

..Generations of women struggling to provide

…Sacrificing their identities with pride.

Within the soul of every woman lives

Her mother and grandmother…who didn’t ask why

They simply lived ‘inequalities lie’

‘No more’ we now say: “This is Equality’s Day!”

We give birth to mercy and love as we stand

With our fathers, husbands and brothers of compassion

The world needs women to emerge

To be healed from inequality’s scourge

The truth of feminine genius holds the promise of everlasting peace

As we gain conviction and choice

The world will have a new voice.

On this day we know America will never be the same

Because women have demonstrated

“Together We Gain!”
