Continuing To Birth A Nation

Continuing To Birth A Nation

A Poem by Dr. Ann Lewis
"

Written the day Hillary Clinton Became the first woman nominated for the Presidency of the United States.

"

Since 1776 we have watched, listened, and believed
..only men
…could lead

...this nation.
Their strengths undaunted,
Their minds applauded,
Their judgments’ rewarded.

We gave them our sons to defend a thrill
And surrendered our daughters to masculine will.
Some wondered: “When will they awaken” we who let our identities be taken?
Who breaks the glass, or the wall, that conceals the genius of us ALL?

Men were strong…
And they built that wall…
Against the women always standing tall.
Men have better judgment; we heard
…but failed to believe the ‘inclusion’ of the feminine.
Men lead
..but they couldn’t concede
...the strength of a flower
...waiting to open its petals of power.

How much longer
..do we need to suffer,
..we were so often asked.
As we watched men struggle in the present,

as in the past.

No nation can be led by one sex or the other.
Leadership is the possibility of all human endeavor.
Leaders growing a ‘heart of vision‘
…tailoring their pain with human revision
Seeing a world of revolutionary proportions
Taking chances ‘for the greater good’ that all humanity understood.

Now we wait to see if a woman’s equality is really ‘equal at all’
How long did she work to ‘stand for our nation’
To prove women can lead
because they, too, were finally freed
Giving our daughters hope and voice
An identity expanded by the example of choice.

Praises to those who expanded the Declaration of Independence
To read: “We hold these truths to be self-evident:
…all men and women are created equal…
Making them BOTH leadership people.
