Insanity

Insanity

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

To teach us a lesson,
They stick us in tiny,
Blindingly blank cubicles
With only the salvation
Of the unpleasant light
Brown of the desk and
The uncomfortable dark
Blue of the chair
To save us from the
Otherwise inescapable
White surroundings.
This solitary confinement,
They say,
Will make us think,
And it does:
It makes our thoughts
Grow more rapid
And confusing
Until they are nothing
More than a
Muddled, jumbled
Mess of intangible,
Unintelligible, meaningless,
Erratic, sporadic, and
Desperate words thrown
Into our minds as
We search frantically
For a way out.
We become
More despondent,
More furious,
More like the
Cornered animal who will
Lash out at even
Those who try
To help.

All their attempts
At soft punishment –
The light slap
Upon the wrist –
Now seem to us
To be a threat
Upon our lives,
Our very existence,
However confused
And indeed,
However hopeless
It may be.
Our Darwinian
Instincts kick in
And we fight
For our survival,
Not consciously comprehending
That we were never
Really in danger.

It is them,
In their futile
Attempt to show
Us their light,
Who drive us
Into insanity
As we merely
Search for a
Chance to escape
This blinding light
And retreat once
More into
The safety
Of our darkness.

Ah, this makes me think of some I have known. You draw the picture effortlessly. This is a wonderful piece because it gives humanity to certain people others may not view as truly human, just like them. For that reason, this is an exceptionally good poem. You also worded this well, not too simple, yet easy to understand. Job well done. :)

This is really good...& so true...I was almost commited in one of those places & I still shudder when I remember it...they treated me like an animal before they even did the assesment. They commited my fiance for 6 months! I think he still has nightmares. I've heard horrible stories from him. This is an awesome piece & it actually makes your heart beat faster imagioning it. Good job.

This is nice. make me wonder, is she speaking about literally in being in some kind of mental hosptial, or is it more of a metaphor for life, about being bound by religtious ideals? please correct me if i'm wrong. because sometimes, people's words do muddle us, bind us, their slap on our wrist makes us beat ourselves to the ground out of guilt.

anyway, this is my interpretation. thanks for sharing such a great poem.
