A Poem by Dylan McCarthy

Gazing out your azure diamonds

toward the rippled ocean shore

at a sunrise erupting upon the horizon

you swear you’ve never seen before...

A wave caressed the golden sandbar,

a wind lifted the singing gulls.

You’re reaching for volumes flooded with ardor

and feeling a call for voyage on the water...

The helm, the sails, the mast.

The fires of your rainbowed tresses

endure the teeming turquoise tides.

You're dancing with starfish upon the seabed

and mingling in labyrinths from light overhead…

The clouds, the dawn, the sun.

Another day - the helm is turning.

Midnight trance - the sails are drawn.

Sailors say the clouds are blurring.

Another dance in the bursting dawn.

The mast is towering in the summer air.

The sun is showering your seaward stare.

You’re quietly sleeping

under the palm tree shade

as sunset fades below

the island palisade.
