Nowhere

A Chapter by EJB

the start of the beginning

"
2012 Christmas Eve: She lay on the ground cold and shivering. Nothing in sight but destruction and dust. All that was left lay beside her; her brother Liam and a precious photograph of the family portrait.

Edie was a 14 year old girl, who had everything in her early stages of life: a home, a family, nice food every night on the dinner table, and a bed to go to every night. Now she had virtually nothing. You may be wondering how this could happen to an innocent girl. Well it didn't just happen to Edie, it happened to every other person on the planet.

On December the twenty first everything changed and her life was never the same again. Edie woke up with a scream, her nightmares the recent past of her memories.

She had once again relived that horrible moment;the synchronized explosions, the blood and dust. She remembered running out of her once tidy room she had shared with her brother to find her parents and elder sister dead. Knowing that there could have been more bombs nearby she had woken up her 12 year old brother and grabbed the family photo. Leaving her memories and possessions behind with one last glance at her dead family she left the house and ran down the street to a secure shelter.
Imagine reliving that every night....

What a start, I love the telescopic feel this has - how you begin with one character and then draw back to pull us completely out of our comfort zones. You make sure we've pictured the basic reality of how precious survival is; Edie has memories and a story, so we know exactly what is at stake. But not only are we visualising her trauama, grief, and the danger she now faces. The same thing is happening 'to every person on the plannet.' I've found a lot of apocolyptic writing a bit too larger than life to get deep into, it dehumanises its characters by saying, basically, 'the world blew up,' and all we can think is, 'poor world.' It leaves me feeling verry hollow, but this is not the case here. You give us someone to feel for, or, more importantly, someone to be. That is a verry promising invite.

Wow! What an amazing chapter. It's really left me hanging for more, so please write more!!! I think you've wrote it very well, starting off with Edie then telling a little bit of her story but not giving it fully away. Really well done!!!!! :)
