The Promise

The Promise

A Poem by Elsie Duggan
"

A poem dedicated to my 57 year marriage with my husband,

"

We stood together

Boy and Girl

Looked into each other's eyes

And make that lovely promise

To God and all our family listening

That we would stay together

Until death do us part

That we would keep each other safe

And to each other would be true

Through laughter and through tears

In good times and in bad

To love for all eternity

To strive for peace and harmony

Hold unto each other faithfully

Go through life together

Hang on to one another when things got really tough

We became no longer boy and girl

But emerged as man and wife

And lived a life so wonderful

Had children that had children

A life carved by ourselves

Had ups and downs like everyone

We survived such awful things

But together we were strong

There was nothing we couldn't do

As long as there were we as two

How did that time go so awfully fast

So many years just scurried by

We always thought there would be time

So many things left to do

But like all good things there came an end

Not to the love nor the promise given

For I am still here keeping our words intact

The forever part is real

You had to leave, it was not your choice

I said goodbye for just awhile

You wait for me to join you

And when the time for me arrives

I will be with you again

And then these eyes that fill with tears

Will once again just smile

I think this is a wonderful poem about a very fulfilling relationship. I also feel that reading your poem might well help others dealing with the loss of a partner/spouse. You have the ability to use words that are easy to read for everyone, yet the way you use the words give them a deeper meaning.
My heart goes out to you when I read your poem, you have the gift to say it all in a nutshell, without becoming shallow!
I'm sure your life was and is still very rich! Welcome here, I think you are a wonderful person with a lot of courage! I hope you'll be writing a lot more and living with your grandchild will keep you young at heart!

I love this one, Lady Elsie!

Very often I read your poems on Gather, unfortunately rarely had the time to comment. Now I do have more time for myself and only am working five days a week rather than seven.

How blessed you are, and what a blessing this piece is...I am honored to feel the connect of your relationship shared. Yes forever is still here, and your beloved is just on the other side of the hill. His presence still very alive in you, and just as a "thought" of today is very much alive, so is a memory...afterall, memories are thoughts. Oh to have loved and lived through the times you both have lived! This is a beautiful piece, and I am touched by it! I look forward to more.

This tugs at my heart strings! This is a wonderful tribute to the person you loved! It reminds me of my mom and dad. My parents have been married for 22 years. I'm so proud to have parents like them. I'm sure your family is proud of you both. My heart goes out to you and your loss. I can't even begin to imagine life without my beloved. Thank you for sharing!
