Tree House

Tree House

A Poem by EMG

I dreamt I lived in a tree house

That I had no worries, no knowledge of the world

Our wars were fought with water balloons

Religion was something grown ups did on Sundays,

And government was some big house that had a round office

School had time to play,

Life lessons were learned by playing catch in the front yard,

And on long drives looking out the window.

Weekend mornings had cartoons and family breakfasts,

Not hangovers or ill feelings

I could be an astronaut or a firefighter

Or both,

And travel the world.

Girls had cooties and to hold a girl’s hand meant you were a bold man.

Yet, that was only a dream

Now we are all worried.

War means death

Religion is used for destruction

Government’s role is overbearing and unfair.

I have no time to play

To dream

Life lessons are forged through mistakes

You wish you never made.

I wish I could go back to my tree house
