Letters

I am writing to my one and only,

I know we both feel so lonely,

but I am going to come back,

safe and sound from the attack,

Please do not forget me,

My love, soon you will see,

That leaving you was only temporary,

Maybe a year or two or three,

Tell the kids I said "I love you"

and daddy will be home soon,

My darling how I miss you,

But do not you worry, do not fear,

It will be over soon my dear,

Time tends to fly by so fast,

Soon we can be together at last,

My dear I promise, this is not the end,

When I get back, I will never leave you again.

Author's Note

I was really bored and just finished listening to a song in German and the music video was of a war. So I started thinking of how people must feel leaving their families to go and protect the country, risking their lives. I just decided to write a poem in the view of a father who has to go and leave his wife and children, and he is writing her a letter. When I write, I tend to imagine it in my mind, as if it was a movie or a video.
