An acrostic of how I feel about dating over the age of forty

DATING OVER FORTY

 

Did you ever imagine being            

Alone and looking for someone

To share your life with after a divorce and over 40?

Instead of being with who you married?

Now must put yourself out there in the world

Go to online dating sites, meet-ups, social events

Overwhelming to say the least but you must to do it, just be

Very careful not to promise anyone anything

Especially yourself because it is easy to get disappointed

Rolling through pages of online profile photos wondering are these recent or

From another era?

Or sitting in a restaurant wondering who the person is sitting in front of you

Realizing they had a fake photo online.

To say it is daunting venturing out into the dating world is an understatement

You really can’t describe it other than to say it is scary

This is such a good acrostic that flowed so well! Dating at a time in your life when you have been through a painful marriage or long term relationship is definitely scary. It's different than when you are younger and feel full of optimism and dreams. Not that we lose our dreams, but some of the gloss is burned off of the optimism. In later life, other people are often marred by pain as well and there can be unusual defenses and complicating factors all round...ex's faces and motives superimposed on new partners, wounded children who are still reeling from parents breakups, lost confidence, economic hardships, etc. So often people fall into confusion about who they are and it can take a long time to come back to center. I'm rambling...you got me thinking.

Great job on this, and I think many will relate to it.

I liked this - I'm not keen on acrostic poems but I'm fascinated by the idea of being divorced at 40 and I think I'd love to read a separate piece on this if you're willing to write it! It's really original - I've not read another poem like it on the site

I was once told
That you are born in to this world alone
Moreover, alone you shall leave this world as well
And if you have another with you at the end
Than that is, more than you expected
Therefore, need yourself and others will share that need with you
There is a fine line between wanting and needing
You may want another
Yet you need yourself more
To be alone with one self
Is better than being alone with another

It was my first experience but I shared other things I have heard, lol.... terrible but so was my marriage so it is what it is....... thank God I have to great kids :)
