COME HOLY SPIRIT

COME HOLY SPIRIT

A Poem by Ellen Hammond

COME HOLY SPIRIT

I first heard of my Savior in school
When my teacher taught the Lord's Prayer
Then Mrs. Gundill read us Bible stories
And assured us Jesus will always care

But at home His name wasn't mentioned
Unless it was taken in vain
So alone, I would sing, "Jesus Loves Me"
Finding comfort, and relief from my pain

When the Gideons gave me a small Bible
And told me that it was God's word
I read many wonderful stories of Jesus
Which never before had I heard

After learning of Jesus in the Gospels
I turned to the book of Acts
And reading about the Holy Spirit
I accepted it all as the facts

I wasn't raised with religion
So in doctrine I was very naive
I just read my little Bible
And all that I read, I'd believe

I wanted to be like the apostles
To bring glory to the Father above
As I expectantly prayed, "Come Holy Spirit"
I felt bathed in a warm, liquid love

There are so many gifts of the Spirit
I was confused by all those I read
I wasn't sure which ones I really needed
So I asked for His wisdom instead

The longer I walk in His Spirit
The more insight He gives so I'll see
That my life really does have a purpose
He'll use the weapons that were formed against me

Yes, all I experienced in and since childhood
Which caused so much turmoil and strife
In His hands are now powerful tools
Bringing others into His peace and new life

Spiritual gifts are still here when we need them
Yes, He works through His body today
As His church we need to be humble
And willing  to accept and obey

Yet we must always keep our perspective
Realizing the gifts play only a part
Jesus looks for the lasting fruits of the spirit
And true changes within the heart

So as we grow in His strength and wisdom
Bringing glory to the Father above
We come to the knowledge and understanding
That His greatest power and gift is His love

My dear friend, thank you for your gift, I can rejoice with you, your are in our Lord's hands, The Holy Spirit speaks to us with your poems. God See's all and knows all. Faith is a Grace, a gift from the Holy Spirit, who creates in our heart's an attraction to God. I AM means God is always here. I could read your poems on and on, always too short. Again thank you for sharing with your awesome gift. God Bless you my friend.
