Sarcasm intended

shout to my dad who isn't very good at being a dad

i drew a picture
and my dad wanted to add "flow"
but dad i don't need another lecture
where you talk loud and slow

i painted my feelings
and my dad wanted to add "energy and color"
but dad you don't get the meaning
stop making me feel smaller

i made dinner
and my dad wanted to add "flavor and a prayer"
but dad flavor doesn't make you skinnier
and i don't have a savior

i found music i liked
and my dad wanted to add "something new"
but dad your music gives me head aches and leaves me wiped
yes some songs are okay but very few

i finally admitted i was depressed
and my dad didn't care
i told him i wanted to die
and my dad didn't care
i told him his wife was terrible
and my dad didn't care

i told him i felt unwanted
and he made no change
i told him i couldn't trust him
and he made no change
i told him i wanted to live with me my mom
and he made no change

When i do something right he wants to add something to make it his way
but when i'm feeling down and i need something from him, his mind starts to stray
so thank you so much daddy.
for loving me when i needed to be loved.
for wanting me to be happy.
for hating my art.
for criticizing me.

As a father I realize I do this with my oldest (7). I don't try put him down in everything he does, I'm just trying to teach him and make him look at things from a new angle. Who knows, maybe its just a natural fatherly instinct to make our offspring try to do everything better. Just some of us get caught up in this. Thank you for your poem! i'm glad it could possibly help you, i feel like that's the same with how my dad treats me but he just doesn't get that he doesn't have to make everything about him (at least that's how it feels), but he just needs to understand that sometimes it needs to be all about me and what i want. not all the time but for once in my life i just want to be able to feel like that. and thank you!
