Affairs of the Heart

For every man

who wins her heart

A man stands in shadows

torn apart

For every woman 

who finds her man

three are broken

unable to stand

Sunrise could not find him in  heart's shadow

No sharper edges wrought to cleave those bindings;

locking the pain with loss and despair

another had won her love. 

disregard replete; he moves

one to another, another; and another 

now in bliss, remiss of those memories,

he weds while broken stems alter Sunrise

no longer kissing their lips

hands only brushed the pearl of their veils now

fingered shards, shred them to shrouds 

three to cover each.

*the first two verses were one of those "flash inspirations" one has the tendency to think they are genius, only to throw them out when read later ..i know you all know what i mean ... but i didn't throw them out because it "felt" right .. so i added the second two verses ... trying to say the same thing in a bit different way ... would love to know your thoughts on them

Dear Mr E. I found your poem moving. It also brought a memory back of an aunt by marriage I was very fond of. She really cared for me at a time my parents were 400miles away. I was young. She said to me to hang on to my man and look after him because there were other women round every corner waiting to prise him away. She wasn't wrong there, that's exactly what happened.

That loss is incredibly difficult to deal with, there was much pain and I sensed that in your lines you yourself understand that loss. Loving someone who doesn't feel the same way about you sucks. Sometimes you may meet someone else, but that broken trust shatters the heart and it takes one hell of a lot of glue to stick it back together.

Do not bin this piece. You have much to say here. This reader fekt your words on an emotional level.

oh no Chris ... as i started to read your review i thought it would be a more happy story with your aunt (i had several nearby when parents were miles and miles away;) but i am so sorry for what happened to you ... no matter how long ago it never goes away .. i lost my wife to cancer when she was only 30 yrs old and working through that i often thought how much more difficult it is for those divorced and/or abandoned ... because they are still around .. and friends and family take sides .. so the emotional support given is not nearly sufficient .. many times makes things worse i think ;((( thank you so much for your very encouraging review ..i have been pretty insecure in posting and keeping it as is ... truly .. i very much appreciate your words, Chris ... Loss however it comes as a result of being abandoned or through death is life changing and difficult to deal with. Your poem reaches out to those who have suffered loss. Very interesting observations made here and I loved reading them. Life is indeed a bit unfair in love and war and the fittest get away with the best. Its seldom a level playing field. I personally feel that we are all at the giving as well as the receiving end of rejection at some points in our lives and it just contributes to our growth. As I take stock of my life so far, I have little to complain about. I do sincerely feel that we should not look back once a chapter is closed, saving us and others a lot of angst in the future. I agree with Chris. There's so much you've given your reader to think about.

Hi gene I could stop by and read your stuff for a year and I couldn’t come close to the kindness you’ve shown me over the years and I appreciate it. I haven’t written anything in a while I just haven’t had any real interest I fight depression all the time. Often I suppose it’s about my misspent youth. I’m pushing sixty I think it’s starting to really get to me

now now now young man! yer just beginning the second half of life ;) i sure feel your pain and wailing over youthful stupidity and selfishness ... brash and wild ... even trying to do good we look back and see we have hurt those closest to us .. at least i do ... i am past you by 10 yrs my friend ... and we do what in Nursing is called "life review" ..its a natural part of the process ... re-inventing ourselves is a good way to dive back into that youthful passion ... but we have temperance and a bit of wisdom to go with it if we have learned anything from that rive of pain ... i took up cedar furniture making and even gave a shot at wood carving ... and way outside my "box" i started and lead a neighborhood watch that has been quite successful if i do say so me self ... but those past darker places still haunt me between sleep and waking ... many times it why i get up early .. stops the vicious mind spin ...

I think we humans are essentially selfish creatures. We often use others as skipping stones, and in turn become skipping stones ourselves. So it's a kind of a cycle of breaking and mending trusts and finding the right one in between, although I do think some are the 'right one' for us at that particular time...just my take and what your poem here made me think over..I like your imagery especially in the last three lines. Interesting piece.

My initial response would be to leave it as is.. It looks good and reads both well and smoothly .. those that know ya are gonna love it... for anyone visiting you for the first time.. I think they too will fall in love but are likely to go over and over.. that is what I always tend to do but in order to try and find alternative angles and possibilities... I dunno whether that helps but I would personally suggest waiting a while unless there is anything you really are unhappy with, which I hope is not the case....I particularly like the fact you left your explanation as free text in the body of this beauty, rather than just as an authors note.. Have a good un my friend and one for me... N :)
