Advice from a Teenage Girl

Advice from a Teenage Girl

A Poem by Emma Lee

"You can't run forever, you have to face your problems."

I tell my best friend as she sobs into my pillow,

the night she decided to run away.

She doesn’t know that I have a bag packed and ready to go.

"You can't give up, what they say doesn't matter."

I tell my nephew when he comes home in tears,

the bullying has gotten worse.

He doesn’t know that bullies are why I hate myself.

"You are stronger then this, I know you are."

I tell my boyfriend while he has a knife pressed to his wrist,

he can’t take it anymore, he wants to die.

He doesn’t know that I have a bottle of pills for the same reason.

“You are amazing, I know taking that first bite was hard.”

I tell my sister as she chokes down her food,

she stopped eating months ago to be beautiful.

She doesn’t know that I haven't had a bite to eat in a week.

Maybe, I should take my own advice.

Author's Note

Emma Lee
I have, on more then one occasion, given someone advice, that I could have applied to myself. But, never once have I take my own advice.
If you got out of bed this morning, or didn't cut, you ate something, if you did anything positive today, I want you to know that I'm really fucking proud of you. Please, don't give up, things get better, I know they do, even if it's hard to believe.
And, please, please, if you need help, get help, talk to someone, anyone.
You can do it, I know you can.

A mature write, and a thought-provoking one. Sometimes we should take heed of our own good advice to others!

Excellent! People nowadays are like that. You have a good way of putting this wisdom into words. I love this. -Blue

The irony and twist of this write...you convey one thing to experience another as a reader in the lines of this verse...
