Desert Sands

Desert Sands

A Poem by Fran Marie

Plain Desert Sands

~Sonnet~

Bleak is the desert with its shifting sand
a boring beige canvas of dry dead heat
dusty winds breathe fever with upper hand
miraged images of oasis sweet
Dull-simplicity,life~ abounds for none
scorched cacti cast sinister shapes with forms
outstretched under an unforgiving sun
yet the plain desert sands for no one mourns
O' that i could! evoke the heaven's rain
and a watery blue moon to awake
to paint this barren canvas new from plain
Align!~these shifting sands to brighter shape
'Alas, 'tis not so, as the sands have blown
deserts have simple beauty~all their own

I loved this piece! I talk about sand in a lot of my pieces, and I think it's a truly miraculous subject. Although I have different views of sand and the Desert, you displayed your own ideas very eloquently and emotionally (not dramatically, but your thoughts to yourself about it in the poem added powerful voice.). I did love the ending, though. Sand is beautiful, but in a simpler, subtler way than most things we consider. A wonderful piece!

This poem captures the "feel" of the desert as well as how many of us "think" about deserts as we visit. Your ending line sums up what the creatures of the desert would tell us if they could speak. Lovely sonnet, Fran! :-) Sharon

Simple beauty.....that is the atmosphere created by this sonnet. Fran, you have a special talent for writing sonnets. They speak to me and take me to a different place. I have never been to the desert, but after reading your words, I can almost feel the crunch of sand in my mouth! Excellent work. Lydia

Ahhhh, Fran, how I have missed your beautiful poetry!!!
This one just serves to remind me what I was missing.
And you STILL are one of the best sonnet writers I have ever known!!!

Personally, I love the desert! There is something truly awe-inspiring in the relentless, stalk landscape ... similiar to the wide oceans... wonderful desert sonnet. xxx
