Winter Willow

Winter Willow

A Poem by Fran Marie

When the weeping willow cries
     and sways on yonder hill
whispering wisps of woe it sighs
in the hush of ev'ning still

with graceful limbs her canopy
     shedding the tears she knows
she will bring the first signs of spring
     as rapidly she grows

and poets tell her beauty in rhyme
     or perhaps in prose
but for now, her sweeping boughs in winter time
     stand alone in sweet repose

I love the willow tree. Shared a story by her present. Your words took me to good places and thoughts. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

This is beautiful. It flows effortlessly.
Your word choice is consistent with both the meaning of the poem and the flow.

Happy to help out.
What a beautifully written poem! I loved the imagery as well as the alliterations. Everything about the poem is so good. Great write! :)

When the weeping willow cries
and sways on yonder hill
whispering wisps of woe it sighs
in the hush of ev'ning still
The personification of the willow intensifies the beauty of the poem. I particularly liked the alliteration with the w's in the third line. The line is fantastic and so expressive! Great job :)

with graceful limbs her canopy
shedding the tears she knows
she will bring the first signs of spring
as rapidly she grows
I got a little confused here. ''She knows she will bring the first signs of spring as rapidly she grows'' seem connected but in that case ''with graceful limbs her canopy shedding the tears'' would be an incomplete sentence but stringing the whole together ''her canopy shedding the tears she knows she will bring the......'' doesn't fit in either. So I wondered if you'd left out some word here or maybe I'm not able to think about it correctly. In any case, would you please explain this to me as I really liked the poem and I'm sure you'll have a good explanation for this. :)

I loved the ending. It paints a picture of beauty, stillness and perfection. Wonderfully written! :)

I have a willow tree in my backyard. I love to watch it sway all year round. This is a beautiful poem, I love the hushed, lulling feel to it.

Great - all the huge number of people who love this poem are right. A gentle and
intelligent piece of writing of professional standard - you have crafted a traditional poem of outstanding quality .

Apparently you have won several other contests with this one... Well, let's add another. Congratulations on winning first in Lyrical Alliteration! Thank you for being one of the few who actually intentionally used alliteration! It lent a nice subtle feel to your piece, the pleasant W's and soft S's really enhancing the imagery, allowing us to feel and hear the gentle swish of willow limbs in a breeze. It makes me want to go sit under one. You did have an explicit and traditional rhyme scheme, yes, but your alliteration was so beautiful that it didn't matter. Thank you!
