The Path of Destiny

The Path of Destiny

A sunset is a reflective event which draws to a close a day never to be repeated. The last day of somebody’s life and the first day of another’s.

In a somber mood I sat on the beach that beautiful evening in March. The sky was a dramatic palette of changing colour, creating a mystical and inspirational view. The sun exploded in an eruption of colours which bled into the sky and spread glowing crocus yellow, rose pink, apricot, cerise and baby blue over the clouds. I wanted to take a bit of the burnished orange sun and let the juices run down my chin.

A lonely sea gull stood on the brown slimy rocks and surveyed the beauty of God’s craft all around. The rhythmic crashing of the crested waves, bathed in a golden glow, as they dashed against the rocks seemed to lull me into a relaxed hypnotic state. Time seemed to stand still, suspended momentarily. It felt like being in a different world.

I must have fallen into a deep sleep and I dreamt three fairies suddenly appeared in front of me, wings beating rapidly. The first fairy was dressed  in purple, her wings a calming baby blue matching the colour of the belt on her tiny waist. The second fairy was clothed in an apple green gown, her wings a brilliant daffodil yellow. She wore a contrasting green belt. The third fairy was clad in a salmon pink dress, with a very muted orange belt. Her wings echoed these colours. Each wore a garland of  rustic flowers in their hair.

As I gazed in wonder, the second fairy introduced herself as Envira and the fairy on her right as Eartha. The third fairy introduced herself as Marina. All three smiled as Envira spoke to me, saying “We are ‘The Guardians of The Natural World’, and we would like to take you on a very special journey of discovery on ‘The Path Of Destiny’, where you will connect with nature and emerge enlightened. Which one of us will you choose to be your guide?

Envira spoke gently, her voice barely more than a whisper. “I am the Guardian of the blue path, Eartha will guide you along the green path. If you choose to go with Marina you can climb aboard her magical boat and follow the yellow path, with Marina as your guide. I didn’t have to think. It was a very easy decision for me to make. I chose to go with Envira.

The beach and it’s surroundings faded and were no more. A lilac colored path appeared into view. As I took Envira’s hand, Eartha and Marina disappeared in a flash of star dust. I’m not sure if I grew smaller or if Envira  grew taller, but we were both the same size as we meandered along the lilac path, hand in hand.

Our first port of call was to ‘The Garden of Butterflies’. Exotic flowers surrounded us on all sides, their sweet perfume fragranced the air. As we sat on a fluffy pink mat and watched all the pretty butterflies flutter around, my cares seemed to slip away. Feeling very relaxed, I watched in awe as Envira snapped her fingers and a huge dragonfly appeared out of nowhere to take us to our next destination - ‘The Bridge of Hope’.

The dragonfly allowed us to slide from his back at a bridge spanning a very deep gorge. The bridge was very rickety and unsafe looking. Envira informed me that this was a chance to let go of all my fears and assured me the bridge, in spite of it’s appearance, was in fact, safe to cross. She added that I had to journey across it on my own and that she would wait for me at the other end. Gingerly, I made my way across and I had just about reached the half way mark, when Envira called out to me, “I am giving you the opportunity to let go of all your fears. Drop them all into the gorge below you, and then take a deep breath”. Mentally I heaved the heavy sack from my shoulders and saw it fall heavily into the vastness below me, and as it reached the bottom of the valley, relief and hope flooded my being. I took a deep breath. When I arrived at the end of the bridge Envira hugged me and whispered, “You are now free to follow your dreams”.

On and on we strolled until a clearing in the trees came into view. A beautiful rainbow spanned the sky and both birds and animals sat by a natural spring. Envira told me that those who drank from the spring were endowed with special powers and she urged me to drink from it with the golden goblet which lay on the grass beside it. As I took a sip of the ice cold, sparkling liquid, she told me to make a silent wish.

Our final destination was to journey to the end of the rainbow, and as if by magic, the dragonfly reappeared and flew us there. I thought the blinding multicolored light which shone on us as we approached, was the gold gleaming in the pot, with the rays of the sun shining on it, but Envira said it wasn’t gold and that I would have a nice surprise when we reached it. As we approached the crock, I realized the luminous intensity was coming from the millions of crystals which were piled high within. I stood transfixed, gazing in wonder at the most marvelous sight I had ever seen, until Envira urged me to choose any crystal I liked, which the rainbow would allow me to keep. I didn’t have to search or delve for one, as the one which caught my eye and won my heart, was the one which sat on top of the pile. It was a beautiful heart shaped crystal containing clear, purple and green tones. I was lost within it Soon Envira’s soft voice barely audible, was telling me it was time to return. We journed back to the beach aboard the dragonfly.

As we said goodbye before parting, Envira said “Be not afraid of life , dear child. Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact. You are now ready to enjoy the fine things that life on earth has to offer. The world is your oyster. There is nothing you can’t do, if you put your mind to it. Your relationships will be stronger too, and the love you give out will be returned to you multiplied many times over. You are now in control of your life, and ready to be all that you can be. Goodbye dear one”.

With a light and joyful heart I said, “Goodbye Envira and thank you”. With a wave she was gone.

I awoke to a gentle breeze blowing on my face. I felt so different. The previous feelings of foreboding were now no more. What a difference a dream makes I thought, as I headed for home. Darkness was beginning to fall. The colours in the sky had changed and darkened to cobalt, indigo and navy. Fading shapes were replaced by shadows, as darkness crept in.

I realized my right hand was made into a fist, and on opening out my fingers, I was lost for words. I could not believe my eyes - there in the centre of my hand was the most beautiful heart shaped crystal I had ever seen, with clear, green and purple tones, just like the one I chose from the pot at the end of the rainbow.

How beyond magical and beautiful dreams can be, your story is evident of its idea, I adore this sweet tale of self discovery, the exploration of hopes in such sweet imageries you have spun by heart, I loved going along with these lines, there is so much beauty to pin point specific ones, the character portrayal of those fairies, the journey Envira took you on, the lessons she gave were heartily beautiful and brimming with truth. Totally loved this ending where you found a souvenir of your dream signifying that it was more real just an imagination from your mind.

I'm hoping to read more such gorgeous stories with mystical details you are so skilled at writing my friend! I really loved reading this!

Bless you always, my dear friend. Lots of love and blessings to you too, dear P. V...
The first paragraphs appeal to the artist in me, revealing the wondrous colors and mood of the sunset. (I've always been taken by such views) Then, the lone seagull and powerful ocean added to the vision, opening the way for dreams of fairies! Envira, Eartha, and Marina, like nature herself, offer wisdom, hope, and solace. Quite enjoyable, my friend.

This is quite simply a fable. A rue story that carries a powerful message and not just for the young. Pleasingly visual and tactile it could and perhaps should be animated . The words are well chosen and the narrative flows extremly well. No matter what the readers age.

Don't believe you can never reach the end of a rainbow to claim that much sought after pot of gold as here a story penned in fine, flowing, colourful imagary and breathtaking visual, a dream comes true thanks to Envira the magical fairy, life now takes on much more pleasing, positve theme, yep, the world's a good place so gonna embrace it with both arms and hug tightly..

An enchanting fairytale to be read over and over to children before bedtime or indeed anytime!

( Curious now though as to how the protagonist's dream may have went had she picked either Eartha or
Marina to lead her on a mystical journey? )
