Fruit Salad

Fruit Salad

A Poem by Celestial Witch Child

My mind gets to wandering
And I think about you
My brain ponders us
The glory days and how we ended
The pain I caused because
You were leaving and I was afraid
Unable to cope with the distance
I had no trust in myself
I didn't believe you that we would be fine
So carefully I said goodbye because
I didn't want to hurt you like
the others had done
Though still you said you
wanted to kill yourself
It pulled endless guilt into my mind
Weighing down my stomach
Filling my body with sickness
I gaze upon my thighs
Skin ghostly pale like a bowl of milk
Strawberry and cream scars symmetrical and parallel
Guilt translates to a dull ache for more
A senseless yearning for cherry slashes and raspberry gashes
Envisioning juice dribbling down my limbs
Collecting on the cool tile floor in a fragrant vermillion puddle
The Cool Whip whites of my nails dig into fleshy peach palms
raising swollen dragonfruit pink crescents
Grape and kiwi bruises blossom like sunflowers
I slather myself in imaginary injures
Wishing I could do the real thing
Wishing that it wouldn't only hurt you more

Um, wow! This was amazing. Dark, creepy, and sad that the narrator feels so compelled to inflict so much self pain. I loved that you ended it with them not actually ripping their skin apart into physical shreds to match their poor mind. Amazing emotional work.

The last line is amazing and leaves the reader with such a strong impression. Lovely piece. Great job.

The imagery here is so start, the structure swelling at the end. It is immensely sad - the use of euphemisms, which paint the colors bright, are more profound than if you'd used more explicit wording. The thread of fear runs very deeply and is somehow present in every line - the wishing, not taking action, the weighing down of the stomach. It's a beautiful piece. Thanks for the read request.

the honesty of this piece is amazing but what really astounds the reader is the complex simplicity of the wordplay...so profound and yet so identifiable to much of the heart within us all. outstanding write!

Often times, I think it is easier to hurt ourselves rather than hurt the ones we love. In the end, both usually occurs because we hide away the feelings that we refuse to face. At the beginning, I was wondering where the "fruit salad" would come into play. I wondered and awaited, until it finally came into play at the end. In order to fully appreciate this, I went back and read through the poem a second time. The emotion in the beginning truly is deep, nearly heartbreaking. The fruit salad analogy towards the end gives an original, sad portrayal of the pain in which the speaker feels. I will say that you are a magnificent writer. I loved the fruit salad analogy because it is one that I haven't heard used. Usually, the analogy pertains to something darker and danker, never as simple as fruit salad.
Bravo to you!
