I Thought I Saw Love

I Thought I Saw Love

A Poem by GardenDelights

A husband with dementia is verbally abusive to his wife who caretakes for him. The story of my husband's dementia and it's worst horror.

I used to laugh

I used to cry

Things have changed

The dam is dry.

I loved the rain

I loved the sounds

Now it reminds me

Foulness abounds.

My spirit was gentle

I thought his was too

Our love was strong

Faithfulness true.

But now his words

Are crass and hurt

He meanly laughs

My objections I blurt.

I used to matter

I used to be golden

All that has changed

His strong will emboldened.

I’d much rather walk

Alone on this trail

Than endure his laughter

That makes my heart pale.

My spirit gets quiet

Crushed deep within me

I long for the past

Even if lonely.

Soon I must leave

My heart I withdraw

Did I glimpse a love

I only thought I saw?
