Often I Write

Often I Write

A Poem by Gary McDonald

Often I write

When the clouds all gather and loom,

And the doors, they shake with anger,

As I must escape this household doom.

Often I write

For the beauty evaporating in time,

As I shatter to the curb of revival,

Needing this here rhythm and rhyme.

Often I write

As the voice of nature consumes me,

Feeding from the spirit within my words,

And permitting this blind man to see.

Often I write

In protest of a malevolent being,

Be it prejudice, or man himself,

In hope these are words of the freeing.

But now all I know,

Is so long as I write often,

A happy man I may be.

Just a simple piece, works better slowly, but it's up to you. I've tweaked it a little already, but i'll keep going till it sounds right. Hope you enjoyed it!

Hmm I have indeed! (enjoyed this) The best part for me is I feel I write for similar -- if same -- reasons. Especially the first, words kept me from a long fall when my bedroom door wasn't enough of a barrier.
I liked it's simple beauty, and reasoned resolution. Well done friend! :)

The words above say it all .. you love to write .. and, it shows.

Though there are lines that could 'tweaked' a little more .. your words still flow, it's as if you're adventuring and surprise, surprise, find something new each time a phrase comes flying from your mind onto the screen or on paper.

I like this style, prose-poetry .. but have a feeling you'll experiment, travel, until you find a genre that gives you that special poetic tingle!

What draws the poet's eye? So many layers, so many observations to make!

This is a profound recollection, a reflection of your heart and mind moving you to write... to freely express ideas and feeling on mutiple levels.. ultimately bringing that rich sense of joy when such words are given wings. I most associated my own writing with the third passage... The natural world brings my thoughts alive... Powerful piece!

Ww write for many reasons... to release feelings, to hide from reality or just to express our thoughts... and this was a great expression of what drives an artist.

It sounds good to me as is, Gary. After all, only you know the full meaning of it. One part is easily comprehended, and that is that creative people always must use their art as an outlet.
