A Time Of Falling

leaves bereft as battlefield bodies,

gulls insistent cry calls the

mind to mourning,

they move in me, murdered by the state

now gathered as summer flowers

opening to light in a safer life

trees reach upward, a yearning for truth, branches beckon the searching mind

blades of grass blend without breaking

in autumn’s cold shadow prisoners,

those pained by a tortuous system

range beside me in deepening dusk-light

i walk slow, finding freedom

of self in cool air is shadowed by

fear of mind fracturing state,

soldiers of humanity stand unbroken

in your righteous anger,

only for evil is there no safe place

This is such a deeply moving, personal and profound poem George. The title is so appropriate for the dark state of the world as you masterfully describe. You take us on a soul-searching walk into the night of our present existence. Each excellently, eloquently written verse is heavy with imagery of the atrocities and abominations, and sees nature reaching Heavenward to find truth. We feel your pain in this night odyssey and place our hope in the fall of evil as you have so dramatically written in the last verse. Bravo my friend.

This poem speaks to me of death. Of torture, atrocities and everything that is evil in man. The bloodied imagery is softened by the references to nature and I like the way it is woven in the lines of this poem. I can hear those gulls crying out, in mourning for those lost. An excellent write and I am left thinking, there is evil all around us. It is everywhere. There is much pain in these words.
