The Music Dies Young--2011

The Music Dies Young--2011

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

It is Saturday, July 23rd,

Amy Winehouse died today.

Still don't know the reason why;

though Amy was Frank,

she told us She Was Trouble,

and won't go to Rehab.

Only twenty seven years,

Back to Black.

I hear echoes of the past,

of only twenty seven years:

Kurt Cobain

with Teen Spirit.

Only twenty seven years,

Never Mind.

And the soul of Woodstock

Jimi Hendrix,

The Band of Gypsies is undone.

Only twenty seven years,

the Experience is over.

The poet of darkiness,

Jim Morrison,

only twenty seven years,

after Strange Days,

Waiting for the Sun.

He Broke on Through

to the Other Side.

And for me,

the saddest echo,

Janis Joplin,

Big Brother was not enough,

even with the Holding Company.

The Kozmic Blues are sung.

Only twenty seven years,

and the Pearl is unstrung.

Ripples in the water.

Echoes of the past

Only twenty seven years

when the music died.

i certainly relate to this...all of our musicians, singers, dead at 27---Hendrix....best guitar player ever...and Janis....taking "another little piece of my heart"---

the days the music died.

Wow, great poem! I love how you worked the song titles and artists into the lines, smooth and fluid, good job.
