Perspective and Perpetual Distraction

Perspective and Perpetual Distraction

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

What do you feel, when you look out

of a clear window -- a glass door --

and the moon is suspended low in the sky:

             orange hazed face coaxing

            sunset to an abrupt crescendo?

For me it is only a flash in time -- a snapshot --

that becomes a memory, as quickly as it was real:

            filed away under experience,

or the heading of future imagery.

Sometimes I worry that I cannot love a thing deeply enough,

because I see a wicker basket of details in everything --

faces are fragments of expression, Willows are inkblots

upon twilight’s feathered seam, the curvature of night is

an opaque curtain embellished with backlit diamonds.

For just one day I want to borrow your eyes --

to see the world from the other side -- with perspective --

blind to everything except what reads as a whole:

I want to see only purple,

not varying degrees of mulberry and wine.

Seeing the forest for the trees was never my strong suit...my mind is full of wicker baskets and I often wonder if my heart is too...every time I look out my window at night, I usually become transfixed by the moon, as if it will fuel my imagination if I gawk at it long enough...I can't accept the simple beauty of the scenery for what it is, there has to be something behind everything for me...everything has to symbolize something else...I used to think that was a good mindset for a writer but now I'm not so sure cuz I never shut my mind off...

Not long ago I mentioned the very thing you speak of in the last stanza, and I have to say again that I'd definitely love to see the world from your eyes once...you have an incredible gift, as this and all your other works so easily demonstrate...great work my friend.

For me it is only a flash in time -- a snapshot --
that becomes a memory, as quickly as it was real:
filed away under experience,
or the heading of future imagery.

Through your eyes, that of a poetess, you see everything in richer imagery, beyond the surface. Each "flash in time" is captured, "filed away" and written about.

Sometimes I worry that I cannot love a thing deeply enough,
because I see a wicker basket of details in everything --

That depth, seeing the finest details, does bring about a sense of love. Yet oftentimes seeing/reading so deeply into something raises questions, and doubts.

For just one day I want to borrow your eyes --
to see the world from the other side -- with perspective --
blind to everything except what reads as a whole:
I want to see only purple,
not varying degrees of mulberry and wine.

I love the imagery and emotion in this stanza, especially the last two lines. Everyone needs a break, to just live in the moment, with a sense of simplicity.

Definitely a favorite of mine, as I can relate so well. Well done, Sarah :)

Are we all perfectionists to some degree. I think we get wrapped up somtimes in trying to be perfect in everything we do and overlook what really is....
Sometimes another set of eyes can help pull you back a bit and realise less is best:)

Here we have a poem that contemplates the wisdom of not letting the trees get in the way of seeing the forest. I love the concept of unshaded purple. This poem inspired me to write this gift poem about String Theory which you may keep as your own:

String Theory

Purple people of one shade
see the union in all things,
oscillating chords all made
of the tiniest of strings.

Charming notes must promenade
as the songs that each vibe brings,
a symphonic serenade
from which true awareness springs.

If love is deep and permanent between two souls, don't question it, enjoy and embrace it ! Although does one half of this relationship have concerns over the bona-fides of the other, are complications from life's stresses affecting the quality of this love ? Perhaps !

Another super creative poem, great imagery with word use, well penned indeed !

This is very good. Wanting to look at the world through the eyes of others..

An artist needs to see more, finer details, and if they are really lucky, they will also see what is hidden. The deeper meaning. It is a gift but as you point out also a responsibility. It is the artist's task to draw the attention of those who do no yet see for whatever reason. But every girl needs a rest.

I really liked this piece, Sarah. And the question it poses. Brava.
