Curiosities

Curiosities

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

there are days when I forget

how you left me wilting in the rain -

a doll in wet stockings outside that café on Left Street

that served the World’s Best Coffee

we both knew it tasted bitter,

as we skimmed the surface with our spoons

and relegated the grounds to cheap white napkins

(skim - tap - skim - tap - silence - skim - tap)

but we sipped anyway, even asked for refills,

because there was always a table by the window,

and we could watch kids dodging raindrops in the park,

instead of straining words from lost mouths

there are days when I forget,

how you were just like that sharp coffee -

a supposed-to-be that required tools and imagination

to hit my tongue with some semblance of satisfaction

but today I remember,

and the weak tea inside this oversized cup

tastes curiously of spiced freedom

you are too brilliant to be praised without superlatives ...!
It is funny how in the desire to want something we strain at making it so, but it just won't be. A lovely extended metaphor. And I love poems about coffee. lol.

Too true...sometimes no matter how hard we try to mold a thing, it just won't turn into what we imag.. read more
The title attracted me and I like the casual tone to this, which emphasises how people don't realise what they've got til afterwards. Your lovely little twists and turns of phrase neatly avoid and make unique this sad and common theme. This was so easy to read, your words just fell into my mind.

So very nicely offered here Sarah. Reading you is like watching little movies...

You are too kind, Jack...thank you :)
I'm pretty sure I visited this same coffee shop, I love the juxtaposition of the bitter coffee taste and the bittersweet relationship in this one Friday. Brava!

Thank you, Frieda! :)
Now even weak tea tastes good compared to that bitter coffee served from the best coffee cafe in the world ! Sometimes better to cut the strings and move on !

An interesting analogy indeed !

Thank you, Tom...I'm glad you got this one.
I think the last thing you want is for me to assume the persona and get inside the head of supposed-to-be for a pithy comeback. Let's just say I "felt" this one but not in the way you might imagine. I'd call this write - provocative. That's it.. I felt provoked. But, fortunately, my sense of civility was stronger than the emotions seething up inside me. Excellent pot stirring, Sarah.

I can see you get more honest with each write. No need for frills here, felt this one Sarah. I'm a fan.
