Looking Down

Looking Down

A Poem by Nicholas Duboe

A poem I wrote about our society's need and obsession with technology. I hope you like it!

Looking Down

We've all heard the phrase "time is of the essence.",

Yet, we waste all our of time with this technological presence,

Looking down at bright screens or pushing computer keys,

Forgetting that there are 6, not 3 letters in the word please.

So please let's take a moment, hopefully one you'll spare,

To think about the people around you and not the ones in there

Your family and your friends, they don't belong on a list

They belong in your heart and in the moments that you missed.

Because you were looking down or posting the next clever thing,

Searching up random s**t on Google, Yahoo, or Bing,

Or sending that next text or writing that new tweet,

Appealing to those so called "friends" that you'll never even meet.

So the next time you reach into your pocket and pull out your phone,

Realize that likes aren't what keep you from feeling alone,

It's living your life and making all of your moments count,

And spending all of those moments with the people you care about.

So turn off your phone, turn off your music and turn off your computer,

Because it's time decide whether you want technology or love in your future.

To tell the truth, I DO own a cell phone but I only keep it for emergency phone calls, nobody but my wife knows the number. I don't belong to facebook, I'm not on Twitter, I've never posted or even taken a selfie and the only reason I'm on the computer a lot is because I do freelance writing for a couple of political websites in addition to posting poems to WC. I'm of a much different generation than you, I grew up in the day where if you wanted to call someone you had to run home or to a pay phone. We went outside, we played sports, got our hands and knees dirty, rolled around in the grass and dirt. It was simpler, none of the pressure people are steeped in now, being CONNECTED 24/7. Your writing is very smooth and the poem sends a strong message that I found refreshing coming from a man your age. I've read enough to know that I will be back to review more. Can you reciprocate, read/review one of mine? take care...dan

I agree.
"So turn off your phone, turn off your music and turn off your computer,
Because it's time decide whether you want technology or love in your future."
I'm waiting for Spring. Kids need to run outside. New world. Learning things we do not need. Would be a better world if kids learn to create and think. Not be controlled and automatic. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry. You made me think this afternoon.

I'm glad and you are welcome.
It definitely speaks about the conditioning of people to be focused on these expensive toys instead of what's going on around you...as I type this comment on my phone...but overall very good =)
