Empty Chair

Empty Chair

A Poem by H.E Watson
"

Poem written from the point of view of a child with an absent parent.

"

There’s just one empty chair at my school play,

Did you get lost, could you not find your way?

Just one empty seat at my football game,

Who held you back, who’s to blame?

Only one empty stool at my science fair

Did you know it was today, where you not aware?

There’s just one empty chair at my talent show,

Did something happen, is there something I need to know?

Just one empty seat at my award seminar,

Was the journey to long, did something happen to the car?

Only one empty stool at my new school greeting,

What happened now, where you stuck at a meeting?

I know backs of empty chairs better than your face,

You never on time, ready or in the right place.

You’ve missed your opportunity to see me grow,

Disappointment as I looked for you row by row.

There is no excuse, you’ve proved to me you don’t care,

You’ve shown me this through every empty stool, seat and chair.

about half way through the 2nd V it dawned on me what the poem is about .. so ..the title hooked me and the story progression held me ... i like that you leave your antagonist "unknown" ... so many can fill there own "empty chair" ... with those who just weren't there ... but i think this especially speaks to parents and children ... life gets busy when raising families .. personally .. i did my best to be there and be an encouragement .. of course there were times i simply could not ... but the times i was are way more valuable and outweigh my children's empty chair by far ... i feel proud of that ;) you tell a large story in a small space ... thanks for sharing
